Barn Owls Hunting in the Snow: A Rare Daytime Sight (2026)

After a recent snowstorm, I witnessed an unusual sight: barn owls, typically nocturnal hunters, venturing out during the day. This behavior piqued my interest, leading me to explore the reasons behind their daytime activities. As I observed, a male barn owl was attempting to impress a female with his flight patterns, but she seemed more focused on hunting. The snowstorm had forced them to adapt their hunting habits, as they needed to find food during the day to meet their energy demands. The female owl successfully captured a vole and flew into a grove of evergreens to feast. Barn owls usually prefer the cover of darkness, but hunger or disturbance can drive them to be active during the day. These owls often seek refuge in thick evergreen stands, haystacks, or abandoned buildings with minimal human presence. Interestingly, this particular pair has been more visible since the winter of 2017, when a warm front followed by cold nights led to a significant decline in their population due to limited food sources. The largest population of barn owls in Idaho resides in the Magic Valley, where they face the threat of collisions with vehicles while hunting along Interstate 84 at night. Barn owls are the most widespread owls globally, found on every continent except Antarctica. However, ornithologists have classified them into different species based on their geographical locations, which some argue is unnecessary. Despite this, I appreciate the beauty of the heart-shaped face of the American barn owl found in Idaho. As the spring approaches, Great horned owls are preparing to lay their eggs, and I anticipate capturing some unique photos of snow-covered nests. The upcoming spring migration promises to be an exciting time for bird enthusiasts.
