In a concerning development, Haider Al-Sayeh, the Director of the National Center for Disease Control, has unveiled a startling revelation about the escalating tuberculosis (TB) crisis within Libya's migrant shelters. Al-Sayeh's announcement sheds light on a critical issue that demands immediate attention and action.
According to Al-Sayeh's Facebook post, the center's relentless efforts in combating TB are evident through the over 1,200 daily tests conducted. The results are alarming, with a staggering 6,194 suspected cases, leading to the confirmation of 3,083 cases. The statistics further reveal a concerning trend: Libyans account for 41% of the infected, while non-Libyans make up 59%. This disparity highlights the disproportionate impact within the closed migrant communities, where the problem is particularly acute.
The head of the National Center for Disease Control issued a stark warning about the treatment discontinuation among migrants. Many migrants are failing to complete their prescribed doses at the center's clinics, posing a grave risk to society. This behavior can lead to the emergence of drug-resistant strains, increasing infection rates among citizens. Only 51% of total cases completed their treatment, while the remaining patients abruptly stopped, exacerbating the situation.
